I don’t know when we started brandishing “our interests” as a both sword and shield, but I know it isn’t new.

We go when it is in “our interest”. We protect when it is in “our interest”. We send aid when it is in “our interest”. We open our doors when it is in “our interest”.

But I want that kind of interest an innocent child has in helping an injured bird. The adult in me says, “let it be, you won’t be able to save it. You might hurt it more. It might hurt you”.

The child in me says, “I want to try anyway.”

I want that kind of interest again.

I cannot think of a better interest than life.
